Miniature Sheet Featuring Four Classic Locomotives of Wales Stamps - BC503M

Here at Staples, we have a large range of Collectibles which recognise a wide range of events and themes. From 2011 onwards, we have had a selection of items which celebrate classic locomotives of the United Kingdom. Within this selection is the Classic Locomotives of Wales Miniature sheet Cover.

This BC503M Miniature Sheet features all four Classic Locomotives of Wales stamps, together with a dramatic photograph of the BR Class 5101 2-6-2T No. 4126 as it crosses the Crumlin Viaduct with a passenger train in 1963 in its border. The miniature sheet is set on a beautiful John Wigston painting of the four locos to compliment the stamps, which has a Welsh Dragon Welshpool postmark dated 20th February 2014.

This miniature sheet cover features the following locomotives:

1st Class Stamp - LMS No.7720:

It was built in 1895 at the Crewe Works for the London and North Western Railway. LNWR Webb Coal Tank is a class of 0-6-2T steam locomotive. They were called "Coal Tanks" because they were a side tank version of Webb's standard 17 in Coal Engine, a 0-6-0 tender engine for slow freight trains. 7720 is one of 292 of these engines that passed to the LMS and were renumbered. One Coal Tank number (ex-LMS 7799, originally LNWR 1054) has survived in preservation on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. The LMS 'coal tank' is pictured on the stamp leaving Britannia Bridge, pulling a Bangor-to-Holyhead local train in around 1930

78p Stamp - The Hunslet No.589 Blanche:

The locomotive was originally made by the Leeds based Hunslet Engine Company and was a 1ft 10-gauge 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotive. One of the main-line engines of the Penhryn Quarries Ltd whose main line ran from the companies' quarries near Bethesda to the shipping port at Port Penrhyn, near Bangor, bringing slate from the quarries to be sent for shipment across the UK via sea, and later rail. This stamp shows Blanche at the Pen Cob Halt on the Ffestiniog Railway in 1964.

88p Stamp - The WLLR No.822:

"The Earl" was constructed for the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in 1902 and opened on 4th April 1903, bringing development to a remote area. Built through difficult country the engines had to be compact and sturdy, capable of handling steep gradients. No.1 The Earl and No.2 The Countess, delivered in 1902, were named for the Earl and Countess of Powis who were great supporters of the railway. The stamp shows The Earl photographed waiting for a car to be moved from the line on Welshpool's Union Street in 1953.

£1.28 Stamps - The BR 5600 No. 5652:

The BR 5600 freight engine was designed by the Great Western Railway Company to transport goods across its massive rail network and was introduced in 1924. A total of 200 were built by Great Western Railways, designed by Charles Collett who became Chief Mechanical Engineer for the GWR in 1921. They were extremely versatile engines with impressive power and acceleration. The stamp shows the loco pulling coal at Cwmbargoed in 1959.
