2014 saw the 100th anniversary of the birth of ten exceptional individuals whose achievements have each influenced their respective fields beyond measure. This Remarkable Lives Island Stamp Cover BC505 features five of the ten stamps in this issue on a Roy Plomley inspired Desert Island background. The five special first class stamps included in this stamp cover are:
Roy Plomley OBE was well known for his creation and subsequent presenting career of the popular radio program Desert Island Discs. Plomley appeared as a guest in his own right in 1942. Desert Island Discs continues to this day with Kirsty Young and remains very popular.
Kenneth Gilbert More CBE came to prominence as an actor during the 50s particularly in the role of Ambrose Claverhouse in lsquo;Genevieve’ (1953) and Douglas Bader in lsquo;Reach for the Sky’ (1956).
Dylan Marlais Thomas was a celebrated poet and writer. He also gave many reading tours and broadcasts. One of his most famous pieces was 'Do not go gentle into that good night'.
Barbara Ward also known as Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth was a noted economist and broadcaster. She focused on the problems of developing countries and was a pioneer in terms of the environment and sustainable development.
Joseph 'Joe' Mercer OBE was famous for being a footballer and manager. Despite the war, Mercer (then a Sergeant Major) went on to play in 26 wartime internationals. Mercer played 275 times for Arsenal and when injury halted his playing career, became manager for Manchester City, Coventry City and England.
